  1. Most of the children of Carlin High School were engaged in the usual playground activities, girl gossiped rapidly sounding like a thousand busy typewriters; youthful first years laughed and chas ed each other around the yard, burning off energy; older kids from the rough end of town hid behi nd the toilets, smoking weed. Steven was sitting alone, perched on the fence like a hawk, watching all the normal mayhem when he spotted Simon Anderson take a nosedive onto the concrete. The boy just went white and dropped, and even though the other kids were making a godawful din, Steven definitely heard Simon’s skull crack like a heavy egg as it smashed onto the ground. The noise was a sickening, hollow sound that made his heart jump in his chest. He immediately jumped off the fence and rushed to see if the older boy was alright. He’d never have thought a man like Tommy Bryce would have been such a history buff but it turned out he knew all sorts of obscure things about some of the world’s most interesting people and times. Pete was also finding being drunk and listening to Tommy’s tales had taken his mind off the craving. It had come back with a vengeance when he found himself in the toilet, taking a piss. The room was small but spotless, it’s white tiling so gleaming he could practically use it as a mirror. Pete was washing his hands when he heard the almighty explosion from outside. He dashed out from the toilet to see Tommy had gone. Outside, through the window, he spotted a few black cars, upturned and on fire, there were people running away from the scene, some were even screaming. His first thought was terrorism, that the Provos had set off a bomb. He found himse
